Confederate Cannon at Hazel Grove

Chancellorsville

Confederate Cannon
at Hazel Grove

Federal artillery held this clearing on high ground in the midst of the Chancellorsville battlefield, but in the early morning of May 3, 1863, Confederate troops captured the area as the Union forces withdrew to the vicinity of Fairview, another clearing half a mile away. Over thirty Confederate artillery pieces were then moved to Hazel Grove to support attacks on the Federal forces at Fairview.

Major General J.E.B. Stuart, commanding the Confederate Second Corp: “As the sun lifted the mist that shrouded the field, it was discovered that the ridge on the extreme right was a fine position for concentrating artillery.  I immediately ordered thirty pieces to that point....  The effect of this fire upon the enemy’s batteries was superb.” -- Stuart’s battle report, in War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, series I, volume 25, part 1, pages 887-888

Brigadier General Alpheaus S. Williams, commanding the Federal First Division: “[T]he enemy placed several batteries in position on this open hill (some of them reported to have been guns captured from our troops), and opened a most vigorous fire upon our batteries at Fairview and our lines of infantry both right and left of this position.” -- Williams’ battle report, in War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, series I, volume 25, part 1, page 680
